The animal rights activist in the leather jacket eating a Gyro sandwich, the moose mascot walking around Sea World or Ronald McDonald at the Renascence Fair. These are disconnected experiences trying to somehow connect to us in a relevant way. The world is filled with “that was almost a great idea.”

How do you avoid two totally different brand directions under the same roof of your facility? Start by imagining a singular emotional outcome to everything your company says or does. When you work to shorten your “we want to be everything to everybody” list, it becomes clear what to do. Successful owners see the future and can define their true connection to a unique guest experience. If your branded emotional outcome is to “inspire” your guests, then everything you do, say, design and bake in your ovens has to have a subliminal level of inspiration.”

From Zero to 100mph in 5 days. I knew little about basketball from a players perspective last Wednesday. Now I can say “I got a little ballin’ in me”. Thanks to the best coaches and motivators in the game today. This week has been transformational for a number of reasons. Everyone should go bury themselves in something they know nothing about once in a while. Take your self our of your comfort zone and dive into the abyss. You tend to find a portion of yourself you forgot about or never know. My take a way… TEAM is everything. TRUST is everything.

I knew that before but now I know it in a different and more relevant way. We need to break ourselves down to the core once in a while. Do something you felt was impossible. I did that with starting a business, running my first marathon and now competing in a physical environment I can;t fully describe. The people here are wonderful. Thanks to Rachel Curtis and Mike Cragg for believing in me and the zebradogs.

Day two of the camp started with Coach K delivering a very emotional talk to all of us. His passion and engagement is truly remarkable. He shared John Scheyer’s end of season video tribute with us. He was crying and so was everyone else during it’s showing. He believes so much in the power of a relationship and a team playing as one. We are all learning a great deal…

11:30 Game tape review from the day before in the Duke locker room. Total game day situation. Amazing to see my fat, bald, white, 47 year old carcass on THE basketball court.

1:15 game #3 for us against team Denver.. We played hard but not hard enough to win and lost 41-33. My game is getting better. I am starting to understand how to run the motion offense and most importantly, I still have both Achilles attached. Guys are dropping like fly’s everywhere. The training room is standing room only and the the trainers are the busiest guys here. This camp is a true fantasy. Everything is the real thing. They go so far in treating you like you are an actual Duke player and we are playing in the NCAA tournament. Amazing.

3:45 game #4 – We get our first win! We beat Dallas 52-49. Played perfect as a team. Finally everyone working together and moving together. My busted my ass 100%. Still cannot believe I’m doing this.

Team Dinner at The University Club. I spoke with Coach K and Rachel Curtis about how important it is for me to be here with them and how important our relationship is to each other. Feels great to have a new family in Durham. We will be working with and assisting each other for years to come. Truly the most gracious people I have met.

Time to ICE, ADVIL, SLEEP. One game tomorrow – 9:30. Then Sunday… The National Championship.

After an amazing “draft night” on the floor of Cameron, I was drafted in the first round (so was everybody else) for team Minneapolis. All 8 teams are named after cities where Duke has played in a Final Four.

Our Head Coach Steve Wojciechowski

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97u3CPEY1Rw

He currently is an associate head coach at Duke under head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Wojciechowski is a 1994 graduate of the Cardinal Gibbons School in Baltimore, MD, where he played under legendary Baltimore Catholic League Head Coach Ray Mullis and was named to the East squad of the 1994McDonald’s All-American Team, playing alongside 1994 High School Player of the YearFelipe López, and against future Duke teammates Trajan Langdon and Ricky Price.

During Wojciechowski’s career, the Duke Blue Devils achieved an 87-44 record, won theACC regular season championship in the 1996-97 season, and played in the NCAA South Regional final in the 1997-98 season. During his senior year, Wojciechowski earned NABC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was an honorable mention All-American.

Assistant Coach:

Reggie Love

Career with Barack Obama

Love applied for an internship on Capitol Hill in 2006. He was interviewed by Robert Gibbs, Obama’scommunications director, for a position in Obama’s Senate office.[2] He was hired with the title “deputy political director.”[4]

As Obama’s aide, he has to anticipate any and all of Obama’s needs.[2][4] As part of a tradition, Love and Obama played basketball every day there was a primary during the 2008 presidential election.[2] Love is currently part of the Obama administration, serving as the President’s personal aide.[6]

Assistant Coach:

Michael Gminski

A retired American college and professional basketball player. Gminski played his high school ball for Masuk High School in Monroe, CT. From there he played four seasons with the Duke Blue Devils, from 1977 to 1980. He led the team in scoring during his junior and senior years. Gminski was named the ACC Rookie of the Year (tied) in 1977, first team All-ACC three years, 1978, 1979, and 1980, and ACC Player of the Year in 1979. He was also named an AP Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980, and a UPI First Team All-American in 1979 and Second Team All-American in 1980.

At the time of graduation, he was the Duke career leader in points (2,323), rebounds (1,242), and blocked shots (345). As of early 2006, he is seventh all time in the ACC in points and rebounds. He is sixth in blocked shots all-time in the ACC and second in Duke history, respectively. He is also second in Duke career rebounds behindShelden Williams and fourth in points behind J. J. Redick, Johnny Dawkins, and Christian Laettner. His jersey number ‘43′ is retired by the Duke men’s basketball team. In 2002, Gminski was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team as one of the 50 greatest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history.

As of March 28, 2010, he was tied for sixth-most career double-figure scoring games at Duke with Grant Hill, behind Jon Scheyer.[1]

Gminski was drafted in the first round by the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. He played for the Nets from 1981 to 1988. He went on to play with the Philadelphia 76ers, as well as the Charlotte Hornets and Milwaukee Bucks. He wore jersey No 42 throughout his career and only got to wear No 43 (his Duke number) in his final 8 games with the Milwaukee Bucks. He scored 10 points in his final NBA game.

Gminski was an exceptional free throw shooter, especially compared to other big men (Gminski is 6’11″/2.11 m). During his career, he converted over 84% of his attempts.

Assistant Coach:

Moe Mlynski

Coach K’s best friend since childhood. He’s an amazing man. An honor to know him.

Ok – That should say enough about what it’s like here.

We lost our first two games today. Coach Wojo was very angry. All my fault. I’m a skier. The only goal here is to win the “Camp National Championship” We are playing two more games tomorrow, two on Saturday and them we will be seeded in the Sunday tournament. I can say that I may have the best shooting percentage of anyone in camp. Took one jumper made one jumper. All teams started out with 9 players. 3 teams have only 6 players left. Two blown achilles today, several knees blown out and one broken wrist. Oh My God.

Back at the hotel for 80o mg’s of Advil and a beer. I have in my life completely understood the brotherhood of golf. The bond that men the wold over have for each other when they share the stories and time together on the golf course. I learned today that basketball has a similar fraternity. There are guys from all over the world here. They share a passion. They help each other, encourage each other, smash mouth eachother and welcome a stranger into their hood. The last basketball game I played in was in 1978. I am by far the worst player here. Every guy is a weekly baller. Most former college players. Skilled in every aspect of the game. I am not. I’m a skier.

We had a series of games this afternoon. I played 5:00 minutes full court in each of three games. Took three shots – made one – air balled a 15 footer – 4 rebounds – 1 steal – no fouls.

Coach K awarded last years K Academy National Champions a gold watch and addressed us all in Sharf Hall. I talked to Kyle Singler for a long time about Graphic Design (his major at Duke) Offered him a job at ZEBRADOG when he leaves the NBA. The K Academy draft is tonight in Cameron.

During a break in the games, I took these pictures of the temporary collection of 32 years of Coach K’s trophies. ZEBRADOG is to figure out how and where to feature these in a new Hall of Fame we are developing for Duke.
